I’d like to share with you a bit of information from Alyza Bloom’s web page, divine-awakenings.com.

She was my beloved instructor in my Christ class at Unity’s SSE courses. She has wonderful insights and great ideas to share.

“I’ve discovered a pathway and process to breakthrough those apparent glass ceilings that keep you stuck.  My unique signature system gently, quickly and easily dissolves life-long limiting patterns, beliefs and obstacles, freeing and creating new pathways for Love, Peace, Abundance, Health and more…

The work  is opening and expanding consciousness through the awareness and awakening of the higher heart, it is the clearing

4and cleaning out process of surrender and release, but most of all it is about discovering your deeper connection with your own Higher Self and living from that place of connection, of consciousness and truly allowing your light and love to be in the world.” Allyza Bloom, divine-awakenings.com, accessed 06/07/2017

We each need to find our own pathway to our hearts. We need to break our old unproductive habits that were started with wrong thinking.

One way has been suggested how to do that is to deliberately substitute the desired behavior for the negative one.

That is fine as far as it goes, but the THINKING behind that undesired behavior. The Hebrew Scripters tell us several times that what we think, we are. So, to do the words of Jesus, speaking from his Christ self within, and other places in the Christian Scriptures.

We Unitics, believe that we need to replace those old, unproductive thoughts of error thinking in our minds.

We do this by first making a denial of the hold those thoughts have on us. Myrtle Fillmore picked up a phrase from E B Weeks that says “I am a divine child of God, therefore I do not inherit illness.” To this I add “nor lack.”

That denial seems to me to cover the whole gamut of error thinking. We were born both as  a spiritual being and a human being. Our human part picks up those error thoughts from our environments.

I’ve previously explained how to change your behavior, but I believed this piece complemented my newsletter from last week on the Seven Day Mental Diet.

I hope you visit Aliza’s web page, read her blog, and perhaps purchase her book.

Blessings.

Seven Day Mental Diet

Several years ago, Matthew Fox proposed, in one of his pamphlets, a Seven Day Mental Diet, which consisted of seven days in which one does not allow any negative thought to enter their minds. In addition, daily affirmations were suggested.

I would suggest that you try this for yourself. The method is simple. You think only on Truth. That being, that you are a God. You have within you The Christ spirit. You are healthy, and prosperous.

Now, it’s common that untruth enters your mind. Doing this method, Foxx noted that the process was likely to stir up a hornet’s nest. That is to be expected. It is what has been termed chemicalization.

Chemicalization occurs when the race consciousness seeks to keep those old, negative thoughts active. In psychology, we call this Cognitive Dissonance. It was proposed by Leo Festinger. It exactly fits the idea of chemicalization.

The mind becomes confused and befuddled when conflicting information to what is currently held in the mind is presented.

The mind must weigh the two ideas and resolve this conflict by either keeping the old concept or accepting the new one.

In Unity, we have learned that those thoughts of untruth come from our subconscious mind. They are learned over sometimes decades of programming our mind.

There is also, as Carl Jung suggested, a collective unconscious. This contains the accumulation of human thought and experience. From this spring what Jung called Archetypes, or as Plato called them, Forms.

Those Forms are the perfect idea of things. Things are part of the Divine Idea. They become manifested through us.

So, I challenge you for seven consecutive days to disallow negative, untruth to stay in your mind When they arise, just let them pass on through, and know the Truth of who you are, and your Divine heritage as healthy, prosperous, and happy individuals.

If you falter and you may well do, don’t despair. Simply weight a few days and start over. Keep it up, until you succeed.

Then, I invite you to post on this page, your successes. By doing so, you act as a catalyst for others to seek to succeed or even try this process.

It will be a most rewarding experience. You can take those blocks as areas in your life that you need to work on and change to Truth behavior and beliefs.

Blessings.

More on Unity

“Unity is a positive practical progressive approach to spirituality based on the teaching’s of Jesus and the power of prayer. Unity honors the universal truths in all religions and respects each individual’s rithe to choose a spiritual path.”(Temple, H. 2011. How to Speak Unity, Camarillo, CA: DeVross Publications).

“Welcome to This Place

Here we are in God’s grace

Seeing love on every face

holding hands, greeting eyes

No longer needing to be disguised

,,,.Welcome to this place of love and light

One Presence, One Power

Welcome to this place of loving life.: Hayes, T., Stevens C., 2010. Ibid

True. There is only one presence and power in my life, God, the Good.

We are made in the image and likeness of God. (Butterworth.

Eric Butterworth tells the story of a little girl that was laying on the floor coloring. Her mother asked her what she was drawing. The little girl replied “She was drawing a picture of God.” The mother said, “No one knows what God looks like.” To which the little girl says “When I’m finished they will.”

Well in Unity, we see God as Spirit. We believe that God is in everything in creation. There is no where God isn’t. That include within you. As Butterworth says in “Unity: A Search for Truth,” you are God. You are not a God, but you are God. That is to say, God is in You. You are made in the image and likeness of God. That means you are capable of doing the things that God can do, just Jesus demonstrated.

We, being God, made in their “image and likeness,” means that as God creation starts with an Idea, so too, our ability to heal ourselves or create prosperity, a job, or what ever begins with a thought. Then, we know from John 1:1 that God was also the Word. So it is with our thought and our voice we create our own universe.

We can’t control what is going on in the world, but we can control our thoughts about it. So, if we see chaos going on in the world, or “evil” things happening, we don’t have to get upset. We can remain calm and unmoved.

That is saying a lot. But, we are what we think. And if we react negatively to the world situations, we will become upset and concerned about our safety. We all strive to not react to those things, but we are spiritual beings having a human experience. So, we do often get up set. I know I do, but I am constantly working on that. I get upset at things that happen in the USA and the world, but after I speak up, then I realize that I have left the presence of God and reacted in thought to those things. Charles Fillmore said that “God’s greatest gift to us was the power of thought!

How wonder full that is. The Bible tells us in Proverbs (23:7, KJV and again in Gal. 6:7 (KJV) that we ARE WHAT WE THINK. So, what are your thougts?

Are they thoughts of lack expressed often by “I can’t afford that,” or do you say “I have a cold, or cancer, or what ever kind of illness you might think you have. The key there is that you THINK you ARE those things. But in truth you are healthy, wealthy and wise. We know this because God is perfect good. Therefore, if we are God, or if you please have God in us, we can not be otherwise.  But when we think or speak those thoughts, we outpicture those things in the subjective realm in which we live and have our being.

So, what are you thinking? Each day or evening,  go into the silence and open your hearts to the Christ consciousness within you. Then do you best to keep that Oneness with you during the day. I promise you will feel better. But when you say “I have a cold” you own that condition, so dear friends, stay positive, make affirmative statements that are spoken or thought with feeling , believing that they are done, and they will come to pass. It may not be overnight, but keep repeating positive affirmations and you will get there. It took Myrtle Fillmore took two or there years to heal herself of tuberculosis and Charles took several years to lengthen a leg that was shortened with a childhood injury and infection. But by the time of his death, his leg had lengthened to the degree that he only had to wear a lift in his shoe!

So, remember, Jesus tells us we can do the things he did and more! We are told that if we have faith the size of a mustard seed, we can move a mountain into the sea. What a concept. Faith is believing something is already fact. So I leave you this week with that thought. You are what you think. That is the core of Unity belief after we recognize that we are God, and that the Christ consciousness dwells in each of us.

Blessings.

Is it Genetic or not?

IS IT IN THE GENES?

This week, my wife, Marcia, asked me a question to which I didn’t have an answer. She asked what Unity felt about the Muslims, ISIS, etc. She felt that saying I love them as Children of God, but not what they do is only paying lip service to the idea of pacifisms and feeling that we can’t separate them from their acts. She had brought up the question if whether or not their behavior is genetic.

Now, from what I know about genetics, I don’t think so. To me, it is more than likely a societal thing. That is to say, it’s a learned behavior. In addition, people are drawn to groups like ISIS for a couple of reasons.

The first is religious fanaticism. Its has been theorized and tested that we have a God gene. The idea is that this gene drives us to seek some kind of religious belief, But that doesn’t explain ISIS, or religious fanaticism.

So, we are stuck for now, on the explanation about ISIS and fanatic or extreme “evil” behavior as a learned response to the radical beliefs they have been taught, or adopted.

Religion serves a purpose to humanity. It gives us a sense of belongingness, and a sense of morality, or right and wrong. Now, we seem to have an innate need to belong. We desire family, friends, and so on. Abraham Maslow suggested that we cannot progress to higher human values unless our basic needs are met, and belongingness is one of those basic needs along with food, shelter, and safety. Unless those needs are satisfied, we can’t progress toward actualization. Actualization being a drive to help and serve others.

When the unfulfilled need for belongingness is coupled with extreme religions that offer a sense of belonging, we end us with the possibility of blindly following their religious teachings. This goes for the extreme right wing Christians as well.

Marcia mentioned that someone like Mother Theresa would love the ISIS people, and be willing to die for her principles. That, to me is a an extreme religious principle, but in the opposite direction of groups like ISIS.

They are perceived as fundamentalists. They take their scriptural interpretation literallu – as the divine word of God. So too do our Christian fundamentalists and literalists. God dictated the scriptures to the writer, who then wrote them down exactly as God said.

However, more and more Christian denominations, and other religious teachings are being examined in the light of who they were written for, what was going on in that period of history, what conditions were the audience living under, and what was the message to that specific group?

For instance, The Prophets in the Hebrew Scriptures spoke of Social Justice. The leaders, priests, prophets, judges, and merchants were corrupt. They took bribes, and so on. Their message was that the everyone had fallen away from obeying the covenants that were given to Abraham and Moses. So, their sins were pointed out, and the people warned of dire consequences if they didn’t straighten up, God was going to punish them. They didn’t so God punished them. Then they repented and came back to God and keeping the covenants.

The New Testament Gospels were written by followers of “The Way,” which became Christianity as we know it, but each Gospel was written to a specific set of people and with a specific purpose and trait of Jesus in mind. The audiences lived in different areas and under different conditions. They had different backgrounds. So, when we read those, it’s helpful to understand this data.

Many Muslims reject any liberal interpretation of the Koran. It is their belief that we all worship the same God, but that the Jews and Christians have misinterpreted what they say. Thus, when all these factors converge and young or older Muslims lack a sense of belongingness, or are strongly influenced by an exacting literal interpretation of the Koran. They will join groups like the Taliban or ISIS.

We see this everywhere, from evangelical Christians to the Arian Brotherhood, and to the militia groups around the USA. The rest of us see them as the embodiment of Evil.

Now Unity sees evil as being in a state of disharmony with the God-Principle. It comes from our Ego as Charles Fillmore said in the Revealing Word. (Unity Village, MO. Unity Books).

We have freedom of choice in how we think, feel, act, and what to believe. When we are not in tune with our Inner Christ or the Oneness, we are capable of doing what people think of as evil. It is our failing to express love, life, intelligence, wisdom, and the other qualities of God. Remember, God is all goodness. There can be no evil in Goodness. It’s illogical. If one is all of something, then the opposite can’t be in them. So it is with God.

Marcia also said that we don’t live up to those qualities when we speak our against the wrong things we perceives President Trump as doing. We are condemning the whole man, not just the behavior.

I admit that I’ve being judgmental when I criticize what is going on in Washington and how I see Trump and company as behaving. But I still, to me, see them as a Divine Child of God. All I can do is send love to them in my prayers. I don’t know how to speak out for what I see as social justice and human compassion without identifying the behaviors that I see as failing to do, what I consider as the right thing, more for those who can’t care for themselves because of whatever their circumstances are.

I’m still a work in progress, but I see social justice as part of the teachings of Jesus.

Have a good Memorial day, and remember those who gave their all so that we can express our opinions without fear of jail or punishment.

MATTHEW FOX’S SERMON ON THE MOUNT PART II

Fox’s third chapter is entitled, “As A Man Thinketh”. He begins with a quote from Matthew 5 that says “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven.” (KJV). Fox tells us this is addressing those who have “ awakened to the understanding of material bondage, and have acquired some spiritual understanding of the nature of Being.” (37).

What Fox is telling us is that when we understand our Oneness, we also recognize that evil is powerless in the face of Truth. We realize that we have been in bondage to material things. Whatever may appear to be evil has no basis in the reality of who and what we are.

Jesus goes on to speak of those who know their true being ” are the salt of the earth and a light to the world.” The light Jesus speaks of is the way we live our lives. The closer we come to following the true teachings of Jesus in our daily lives, the more we shine our light to the world. They know we have a secret.

Fox continues telling us that if we make every effort to practice the teachings of Jesus in our daily lives and seek systematically to destroy everything in our daily lives and in us that shouldn’t be there, such as selfishness, pride, self-righteousness, jealousy, self pity, resentments, and condemnation, and so forty and starve these error thoughts out by not giving them

expression and extend “right-thought, loyalty to everything within your ken [your range of knowledge or sigh] especially to the people or things you dislike; then you are worthy to be called the salt of the earth.” (p.48).

This is an area where many of us, including myself fall short. I am very passionate about my feelings, and my political stance. I often criticize the administration soundly, in judgement, rather than with understanding and love. It’s an area that most of us need to work on. We take the things “out there” and erroneously speak ill of them. Its an area that we all need to work on.

If we live the way Jesus teaches, whatever our present circumstances may be, whatever difficulties we struggle with or whatever illness or medical condition we will be triumphant over them. Fox tells us, we will make our demonstration (an answer to our positive prayers) in the fastest possible time, and will experience a “healing,” and be an illuminating influence on all around you.” (p. 48).

I must also pass on his admonition to not try to force other people to accept Spiritual Truth. But let them see how we live, and they will become curious and “come running to you, begging you ti give them the wonderful things you have .

True Christianity is a positive influence when it adheres to the teachings of Jesus. A problem, as Charles Fillmore points out, is that the “Christian” ddenominations have lost sight of those teachings in favor of dogma. They have moved God to somewhere “out there.” They have forgotten that Jesus told us that the Kingdom of heaven is within, not some far off, future place. As Eric Butterworth is noted for saying, “God is not out there, he’s in us.”

I have previously written about Jesus and the Christ. Just as a reminder, Jesus was a man who lived in Israel. Christ is our touchstone to the God-mind and our connection to that Oneness of which we are but an extension.

We were made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1). Thus, we are cocreators of the world in which we live. The appearances of the outer world are but whatever meaning we attach to them. If we give them any power over us, then we languish in fret and anxiety.

BUT, when we realize that they are but what we believe them to be, and change our thoughts about them, they lose their power over us.

I often told my clients that when we give life to our fears, we place the locus of control “outside us.” But when we see fear as the an acronym of “False evidence appearing real,” then it no longer threatens us.

When we take control of our own lives, and live according to the teachings of Jesus living in his Christ, we have enormous power. The title of Fox’s third chapter, “As a Man Thinketh” so he is. That is from Proverbs 23:7.

Our thoughts are things. What kinds of things they are is up to us. Will you give them the meaning and power of Truth, or will you live in fear and languish in pain.

As for me, I choose Truth. I’m not perfect, but I strive daily to live be the best Christ I can be. Every day I strive, the closer I come. Will you join me on this quest?

The Sermon on the Mount

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT

I’m reading a very intriguing fantasy novel. Its called “The Only Begotten Daughter” by James Morrow It is about this woman that is born by a “miracle” when her father, a hermit, donates sperm to help pay expenses. He’s called in one day and told that there is something wrong with his sperm.

It seems that within that sperm sample was also an ovum, and it was fertilized by his sperm. It’s placed in an artificial womb and the man for some reason steals it. It is finally the it is “born” It’s a girl he names Julie.

As Julie grows, she discovers that she has “powers.” After discussing it with her father, she concludes that she’s the daughter of her Mother God. Her father admonishes her not to let the world know of her powers.

Skip many years forward, and she is enticed to come to Hell by the devil. While there, she discovers that Jesus is there, dwelling in this cave where he’s ladling water over the heads of the damned, and giving them a kind of morphine that induces a state of euphoria in them and then then throw themselves into the fiery pit where their suffering is ended.

She had daily discussions with Jesus about their mutual mother, and he is astonished at the mess the churches has made of his teachings. He describes his teachings much like those of New Thought and Unity. That discussion, however, reminded me of Matthew Fox’s “Sermon on the Mount.”

That book is about what the Sermon on the Mount really means metaphysically, specifically the Gospel of Matthew.. Especially the Beatitudes.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the “kingdom of heaven.”

In Unity, we understand that the Kingdom of Heaven is within us. We create it with our thoughts, just as we create our own hell. Ok, the inheriting the Kingdom fits, but what about the “poor in spirit,” Aren’t we supposed to be strong in spirit? Fox conjectures that being poor in spirit means that we are not puffed up by piety. We are humble in spirit. Our spirits need the food of Truth. Thus, by being “poor in spirit” we in fact open ourselves to the Truth of who we are, and thus obtain the Kingdom of Heaven within ourselves, and become the best Christ we can be.

“Blessed are they that mourn; for they shall be comforted.” Normally we think of mourning of being bad, but Fox tells us that it’s good in that out of our despair we seek Truth, comfort, and help. So, it is our natural state to be cognizant of our Christ and our true heritage. When we reach out, then we are often ready to be comforted by the Truth of who we are, and that we can change any situation by changing our thoughts.

:Blessed are the meek; for they shall inherit the earth. Aren’t we supposed to be strong in our faith? What is Jesus trying to tell us here? By being meek, we again are not puffed up with ideas of grandeur. We accept where we are, and understand that we do control the world by our thoughts. Fillmore in the “Revealing Word” tells us that earth represents our consciousness of our physical body. Meek means we are highly trained to react to the physical exterior of chaos with love. So, if we are meek, we are aware of our physical body and treat it with love. It is the Temple of our Christ.

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled.” To we in Unity, this is straight forward. When we hunger and thirst for righteousness we yearn to know Truth, and diligently seek it out. When we seek our connection to our Oneness in the silence, we are filled with joy and Truth.

“Blessed are the Merciful; for they shall obtain mercly.” This is a perfect example of the “Law of Cause and Effect.” Simply put, we get what we give. If we are merciful, we love all, help others without expectation of any return, and accept people for who and what they are, not rejecting them because they are different in ANY way.

“Blessed are the Pure in Heart; for they shall see God.” Fox tells us this one is  gnomic which sums up in a few words, the whole philosophy of religion.

“Blessed are the peace makers: for they shall be called the children of God.How wonderful. What a concept. Again, this is the essence of true religion. Making peace! Not war, not slamming another religion or denomination because it/they don’t believe as you do.

“Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness sake: for this is the kingdom of heaven.” Once you understand the power of positive prayer, and the Truth, we can invoke our twelve powers to turn this persecution into love and positive relations. This is part of the Kingdom of Heaven. Peace! Silent thought of the All-Power of Love and Wisdom will cause any trouble to melt away almost imperceptibly. Then what ever arrangement will be best for all parties in the long run will come about under the influence of the Word thus spoken silently.” (Matthew Fox. The Sermon on the mount.)

“Blessed are ye when men shall revile you and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad; for great is your reward in heaven; for so persecuted they the prophets which went before you.” We know that the will of God is for harmony, peace, and joy, and that these things are to be attained by cultivating right thoughts, or “righteousness,” this is a very startling statement. Jesus tells us again and again that is our Father’s good pleasure to give us the “Kingdom of Heaven” and that the way in which we are to receive it is by cultivating serenity or peace of soul. We need to understand the source of the persecution is none other than our own selves. Not OUTSIDE persecutors, but INSIDE persecution of our own making.

So, now we have a decision. To pay lip service to Jesus, is to say that Christianity is the divinely inspired Truth, to boast of being Christian, and then quietly to evade in practice all the definite implications of his teachings, is hypocrisy and weakness of the most utterly fatal kind.

The trouble and sorrow that we as a human race suffer is realy due to the very fact that our way of living is so opposed to the Truth, that the things Jesus taught and the things Jesus said seem to us at first sight to be foolish and wild.

However, when we understand them correctly, the teachings of Jesus are found to not only be true but exceedingly practicable of all doctrines.

The various churches have so complicated the simple teachings of the “Way Shower, Jesus” that we an hardly recognize his teachings. Nowhere in the teachings of Jesus did he institute any ritual other than the Last Supper. Either Jesus is correct in his simple teachings, and we are on the right tract in our search for their true meanings and how they apply to our life, or Jesus is a farcical being made up by a group of people who came together to make up stories about a migrant Rabbi who wandered around the Holy Land, and had a lot of groupies following him.

Which is your Jesus? What is the Truth of who you are? In Unity, we don’t say that we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. We say that he is the only human that was able to attain his full divinity and Oneness with all. He taught us in simple terms how to do the same thing he did, He told us that we could do the same things he did, if we but believe and have faith.

I plan to continue next week talking about “The Sermon on the Mount” by Matthew Fox covering his discussion of “As A man Thinketh.”

The Subconscious Mind

Dr. Ron Hestand, RscP

Weekly Newslette

Note: I’m sorry this issue is late. I was facing some physical challenges at the end of last week.

The Subconscious Mind

There is a secret that proponents of creative visualization have known for years. Today, science is beginning to show some evidence why…

But according to the cutting-edge research from Dr. Bruce Lipton at Stanford Medical Center it is your subconscious mind that ultimately casts the deciding vote on how much success, abundance, health and freedom you experience in your life.

Dr. Lipton explains that “most people don’t even acknowledge the subconscious mind is at play when the fact is it’s a million times more powerful than that of our conscious mind, and that we operate 95-99% of our lives from the subconscious mind’s programs.

Your subconscious mind has been programmed with a blueprint that contains limits for (among other things) show how happy we can be, how successful we can be, how healthy we can be, what types of vacations we will take, how prosperous we will be, what our occupation will be, and even what kind of car you will drive!

So, the question is how do you change this blueprint and its programs.

That is the beauty of Unity’s positive prayer. The subconscious gets programmed by repetitive statements in the conscious mind. We take in things from the external world through our senses. They give us clues as to who and what we are.

For example, I was told while growing up how horrible I was, how I’d never amount to a hill of beans. I was beaten regularly by my father, for no reason at all, usually, and my mother rarely showed any affection, except when she could show off how talented her son was as a trumpet player. I had to play my trumpet at her church functions. That was the only time she would even mention that she loved me.

Until his death in 2007, my father lauded on by brother. When I started working in psychology, I kept hearing “When are you going to get a real job like Phil’s.”

So, I carried those things into adulthood. I had four failed marriages. I constantly put myself down.

I had known about new thought because I had read “Science of Mind Magazine” off and on, whenever I saw it on the magazine rack. So, I began to learn about my self-talk and what it was doing to me. So, I began to repeat the affirmations in that magazine. Shortly, I learned to do what is called today, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which started out as Rational Emotive Therapy devised by Albert Ellis. Without going into detail, it amounts to challenging that self-talk. As well as Gestalt Therapy which centered essentially in staying in the here and now.

My self-esteem grew I began to feel good about myself. I undertook a third Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy and finally my doctorate in counseling psychology. In the process of all that, I discovered Unity and my world opened up.

Our positive prayers turned my life around. Through them, and a total acceptance of the Christ within me and my own Divinity, I now know who I am, I am making strides towards my goal of being a Unity Minister at the ripe old age of 74 when I finish.

It all came about through eliminating those error thoughts I was raised with, and supplanting them with Truth. Truth of who I am, Truth of what I am. And Truth of my own divinity and part in creating my own world.

You to can do this. During your prayer and meditation, pay attention to those stray thoughts that float through you mind. What are they telling you about yourself? I have often suggested that you stop the minute you become aware of those thoughts and if you are alone, shout out “Stop”, “Erase”, or “Cancel-cancel.” Then immediately replace that thought with a positive affirmation. In this case, the stop, erase, or cancel-cancel serve as a denial, followed immediately with a positive affirmation of Truth! Additionally, I suggest you use the most powerful statement of “I AM” and what ever it is you are now affirming.

Then shift your meditation to holding that Truth, or I AM statement. Carry that over into you daily life. Speak that truth as often as you can!

You will be surprised at how much more you will feel that connection to your Christ, your I AM.

Two Different Stories of Creation

Day 5

Day 7

Genesis One

Day and Night

Firmament and heaven

Dry land (earth), plants

Seasons, day and night

Sea creatures, birds,

Animals, man and woman

Genesis Two

Heaven and earth, plants, man in Eden

Woman

As we can see, in the first version, God took 6 days of creation, and rested on the seventh. In the second, it seems all was created in one day, with possibly the creation of Eve. on a separate day. It is interesting that in the second version, there is no Sabbath!

This is because like other books in the Scriptures, several authors wrote them from different perspectives and times. The first version is attributed to a Priestly writer, according to the NISV Interpreters Bible, That source goes on to note that the “Image and likeness of God” has been interpreted many ways, but we in Unity prefer the literal version, that we were created in the image and likeness of God with the same creative powers. In addition, it notes that “out of the ground” implies that God had to implant the soul. This Interpreters Bible notes that this creation in the image and likeness of God could either be interpreted as the function, which traditional Christianity hold fast to, in the idea that we were put here to tend for the earth.  The nature interpretation, which I see Unity holding  to seems to imply that we have the same powers of man, and create our own realities.

The second version of the Creation in Genesis 2 is by another writer, and takes place as I noted above with no reference to time. It takes place entirely in the Garden of Eden. The Interpreters Bible annotation suggests that this writing took place in a land of plants and animals, thus the order of creation. It notes that man was alone, and God didn’t think it was right, so he created a woman from Adam’s rib. (This passage is often used to justify woman’s secondary place in society.)

However, I must question the Interpreters Bible’s commentary ending about the end of the creation narrative that other humans were created to help Adam tend for the garden as second reason for Eve, but this rendition does not, that I could find, mention the creation of other people. Growing up, I was taught that the entire population stemmed from Adam and Eve’s children. Additionally, I have never seen an explanation of where the Giants came from. From other sources, suggest they were the Nephilim and human offspring.

WHAT IS NEW THOUGHT

Earnest Holmes said, “New Thought is a correlation of the laws of science, the opinions of philosophy, and the revelations of religion applied to the aspirations of man.” (Science of Mind). The Encyclopedia Britannica explains it this way New Thought is a “…mind healing movement that originated in the United States in the 19th Century, based on religious and metaphysical (concerning the nature of ultimate reality”) presuppositions,”

Thomas Troward, an English retired Judge, thought of it as “…seeing the relations of things in a New Order.”

New Thought ma be traced back to Plato’s concepts of Form. It stemmed from the dissatisfaction on the part of many people with empiricism of the sciences, and religious skepticism of the 17th and 18th centuries.

The early Christian Mystics felt Jesus’ awareness of our divine nature, based on intuition , not reason, according to Ralph Waldo Emmerson (The Phi Beta Kappa Speech). But as I noted above, it can be seen in Plato’s focus on reason and intellect and the concept that there is really only Form. That the realm of ideas (Form) was more real than matter (substance).

IN addition, it pulled form Eastern religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism.

The principles of New thought are that the Divine is in all things, animate or inanimate, and that God is

immanent. It sees our nature as Divine. That is, we are one with God and are spiritual creatures having a human experience.

It teaches that since we are made in the image and likeness of God (Gen. 1:26), those qualities are within us, and we can use them just like Jesus said (John:

14:12).

Our physical and financial problems are the result of incorrect thinking. Thus, the mind has the power to heal the body.

In New Thought, Truth is continually being revealed to us through prayer and meditation. No single person, or institution can declare the final nature of Truth. Thus, it can never be finished and has no creed.

God is omniscience, omnipotence, omnipresence, and omnipotence, not omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. God is those things, not has them. God does not have power, God is power. God does not have love, God is love. God does not have good, God is good.

God is seen as Idea (the father), Thought (son), and Expression (Holy Ghost.) God is both male and female, and not apart from us, but a part of us, God is in us and we are in God (John 17:24) and that the same qualities that God has, we too have been made in the image and likeness of God (Gen 1:26). We can use those qualities and abilities the same as Jesus did (Mat 23>23). Our physical and financial problems are the result of incorrect thinking. Thus, the mind has the power to heal us and provide us with prosperity.

In The Art of Thought, First Treatise, Chapter 8, of the Course in Love (Helen Schucman) says: “My mother Mary, was responsible for the incarnation of Christ in Me, and I am responsible for the incarnation of Christ in you. This union of male and female is but union of the parts of yourself, expressing in form and story, expressed in other words, in a visual pattern that aids your understanding of the invisible….It is one more demonstration of cause and effect being one in truth. It is one more demonstration of what needs to occur now, in this time, in order for the truth of the resurrection to be revealed and lived.”

In New Thought, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, and was a human. He realized the Christ in himself. Christ is the Logos (word) that created the world (John 1:1) That Christ is in each of us, and our own Divinity. New Thought holds that by recognizing the Christ in us, and our own divinity, we then know the Truth and can do the things Jesus did and more (John 14:12).

In New Thought, through the recognition of the Christ within us, we set aside old carnal thoughts and begin to express our Christ (our resurrection).

Thoughts are things in New Though. Whatever we hold in our mind, that is what we get in the objective world (Proverbs:4:23). We can be healthy, and prosperous, by thinking thoughts of health and prosperity. OR, we can think thoughts of lack and poor health, and get those things.

Since God is all Good, as noted earlier, and we are created tin the image and likeness of God (Gen. 1:26), we are good and not sinners. We are not born with the burden of Original Sin. Evil arises out of the carnal desires of human kind. Sin (missing the mark) a mistake. We can always change our mind and take a new tact. We can change our thinking to something good.

God is all there is. Humanity, the plants, animals, and inanimate matter is a part of God, and cannot be separated from God (John 17”23).

TRUTH

This week’s newsletter is based on H. Emilie Cady’s book, “How I Used Truth.” (Unity: Unity Village, MO.)

She had a thriving practice and ministry when she had what she believed to be a message from God to devote her life to teaching Truth, and to not accept any payment.

Cady tells of the time she had a spiritual message to devote her life to teaching and healing with Truth. But, she goes on to say that she spent years teaching and healing with Truth, and “…spent years, hopefully and happily gone on enduring hardships believing that God would supply, I had not once said ‘It is done. God is now manifesting my supply.”

  1. Emilie Cady spoke Truth when she wrote “There is only God, all else is a lie.” That is the Truth Unity holds high. We believe that there is only God. That God is Spirit and all things stem from and are a part of that Spirit. (How I Used Truth, Unity Books).

It was after that that she saw money flowing in from multiple sources, some unexpected. That demonstrates one element of Truth. We must pray EXPECTING results. That is what Myrtle Fillmore did when she was praying for a cure for her many afflictions, but notable tuberculosis. She based her prayers on what we call a denial: “I am a divine child of God and therefore I do not inherit illness.”

In Unity we believe, as Cady and Myrtle did based on Malachi 3:10 NIV “’Test me in this , ‘says the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be enough room to store it.’”

Now, we need to believe that our prayers are answered because as Cady said, “There were, in the person of Jesus, two distinct regions. There was the fleshly, mortal part that was Jesus, the son of man, then there was the central, living, real part that was Spirit, the Son of God—that was the Christ, the Anointed. So each of us has two regions of being—one the fleshly, mortal part which is always feeling its weakness and insufficiency in all things, always saying ‘I can’t.’ Then at the very center of our being there is something, that, in our highest moments, knows itself more than the conqueror over all things; it always says ‘I can, and I will.’ It is the Christ child, the Son of God, the Anointed in us. ‘Call no man your father on the earth’ Jesus said, ‘for one is your Father , even he who is in heaven.’” Mat. 23:9.

The Truth of who we are is that we are that divine child of God. We are of divine birth. We are made in the image, and likeness of God. Gen 1”26. Thus we have all the power of God through the Christ within.

We know that our thoughts are things. Proverbs 23:7 tells us; “For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he….” This verifies that our thoughts are manifested in our fleshly realm, as Cady puts it.

So dear readers, Truth tells us that we are the Christ, and that we have all the power that Jesus did. So, we need to be careful of what we think and say, because that is what will manifest in our lives.

Cady mentioned that she had a sprained ankle that was not healing. Being a physician, none of her remedies worked. So she turned to prayer. After praying for some time, it dawned on her that she had not spoke the Truth, “I it is done” (Lessons in Truth, Unity Village, MO: Unity Books

So, remember to keep a watch on your thoughts. If we are thinking, “I’m sick,” “I don’t have enough money to pay my bills,” ”I have cancer,” or other thoughts, you are speaking your I AM and saying that you are or have those conditions.

But, please believe that you are not those things, despite external evidence to the contrary, In Truth, you are that divine child of God, created perfect, and inherit the riches of the world, IF you keep health and prosperity, and wonderful loving relationships in your mind!
