WHAT IS NEW THOUGHT

Earnest Holmes said, “New Thought is a correlation of the laws of science, the opinions of philosophy, and the revelations of religion applied to the aspirations of man.” (Science of Mind). The Encyclopedia Britannica explains it this way New Thought is a “…mind healing movement that originated in the United States in the 19th Century, based on religious and metaphysical (concerning the nature of ultimate reality”) presuppositions,”

Thomas Troward, an English retired Judge, thought of it as “…seeing the relations of things in a New Order.”

New Thought ma be traced back to Plato’s concepts of Form. It stemmed from the dissatisfaction on the part of many people with empiricism of the sciences, and religious skepticism of the 17th and 18th centuries.

The early Christian Mystics felt Jesus’ awareness of our divine nature, based on intuition , not reason, according to Ralph Waldo Emmerson (The Phi Beta Kappa Speech). But as I noted above, it can be seen in Plato’s focus on reason and intellect and the concept that there is really only Form. That the realm of ideas (Form) was more real than matter (substance).

IN addition, it pulled form Eastern religions such as Hinduism and Buddhism.

The principles of New thought are that the Divine is in all things, animate or inanimate, and that God is

immanent. It sees our nature as Divine. That is, we are one with God and are spiritual creatures having a human experience.

It teaches that since we are made in the image and likeness of God (Gen. 1:26), those qualities are within us, and we can use them just like Jesus said (John:

14:12).

Our physical and financial problems are the result of incorrect thinking. Thus, the mind has the power to heal the body.

In New Thought, Truth is continually being revealed to us through prayer and meditation. No single person, or institution can declare the final nature of Truth. Thus, it can never be finished and has no creed.

God is omniscience, omnipotence, omnipresence, and omnipotence, not omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. God is those things, not has them. God does not have power, God is power. God does not have love, God is love. God does not have good, God is good.

God is seen as Idea (the father), Thought (son), and Expression (Holy Ghost.) God is both male and female, and not apart from us, but a part of us, God is in us and we are in God (John 17:24) and that the same qualities that God has, we too have been made in the image and likeness of God (Gen 1:26). We can use those qualities and abilities the same as Jesus did (Mat 23>23). Our physical and financial problems are the result of incorrect thinking. Thus, the mind has the power to heal us and provide us with prosperity.

In The Art of Thought, First Treatise, Chapter 8, of the Course in Love (Helen Schucman) says: “My mother Mary, was responsible for the incarnation of Christ in Me, and I am responsible for the incarnation of Christ in you. This union of male and female is but union of the parts of yourself, expressing in form and story, expressed in other words, in a visual pattern that aids your understanding of the invisible….It is one more demonstration of cause and effect being one in truth. It is one more demonstration of what needs to occur now, in this time, in order for the truth of the resurrection to be revealed and lived.”

In New Thought, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, and was a human. He realized the Christ in himself. Christ is the Logos (word) that created the world (John 1:1) That Christ is in each of us, and our own Divinity. New Thought holds that by recognizing the Christ in us, and our own divinity, we then know the Truth and can do the things Jesus did and more (John 14:12).

In New Thought, through the recognition of the Christ within us, we set aside old carnal thoughts and begin to express our Christ (our resurrection).

Thoughts are things in New Though. Whatever we hold in our mind, that is what we get in the objective world (Proverbs:4:23). We can be healthy, and prosperous, by thinking thoughts of health and prosperity. OR, we can think thoughts of lack and poor health, and get those things.

Since God is all Good, as noted earlier, and we are created tin the image and likeness of God (Gen. 1:26), we are good and not sinners. We are not born with the burden of Original Sin. Evil arises out of the carnal desires of human kind. Sin (missing the mark) a mistake. We can always change our mind and take a new tact. We can change our thinking to something good.

God is all there is. Humanity, the plants, animals, and inanimate matter is a part of God, and cannot be separated from God (John 17”23).

Namaste
